Learn to Skate with CanSkate

Preston FSC follows the CanSkate curriculum which is designed by Skate Canada, our national skating body. We have two streams:

  • Buddies on Blades for our youngest skaters (ages 3 & 4) and

  • CanSkate for children aged 5 and up.

Information on offerings for the current and upcoming seasons can be found on our registration page.

CanSkate is a dynamic learn-to-skate program that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development.

The CanSkate program promotes physical activity and fitness, and is a stepping stone to all other ice sports.

Taught by NCCP-trained coaches and assisted by trained program assistants, skaters will learn a complete series of balance, control and agility skills taught in six stages of learning that pertain to figure skating, hockey, ringette, and speed skating as well as general recreational skating. CanSkate uses nationally-tested and proven curriculum and delivery methods that guarantee skater success in developing stronger basic skills.

CanSkate is designed for beginners of all ages, as well as for those wishing to improve their basic skills whether their focus be for figure skating, hockey, speed skating or just skating for fun. All you need are skates, a CSA-approved hockey helmet and warm clothes. Private lessons are available for skaters who wish to progress through CanSkate at a faster rate through one-on-one instruction.

Preparing your child for skating.

If your child has never been on the ice before, here are some things to try at home with your child wearing their skates.

All skaters must wear a helmet on the ice until they have completed Stage 5 of the CanSkate program. This policy is in place to protect our skaters, and applies to lessons, competitions, and our annual Gala. Skaters who have passed Stage 5 may continue to wear a helmet if they wish.

CanSkate FAQs

How old does my child have to be to learn how to skate?

Our Buddies on Blades program is designed for children who are 3 and 4 years old. In this program we use toys and other props to help the children develop their skating skills in a fun way.

My child wants to play hockey. Why should they learn to skate at a figure skating club?

The basics of skating are the same whether the goal is hockey, ringette or figure skating. CanSkate is designed to teach skills that cross the disciplines.

Why do I need to wear a CSA-approved hockey helmet to skate?

Hockey helmets are designed to help protect against head injuries occurring on ice, be it from a fall or a collision. It is important to ensure that when a skater is on the ice, they are protected with equipment designed for their sport or activity.

Do we have to participate in Fundraising?

All families are asked to help the club by fundraising or volunteering their time. More information is available on the fundraising page.
